Session II: Preparing Young Leaders to Navigate Kenya’s Political Landscape

What does it take for young people to successfully navigate Kenya’s political landscape and pursue leadership with purpose?

This question shaped Session II of the CAF Youth Legislators Conference 2026, which brought together young legislators and aspiring leaders for a candid conversation on the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that come with leadership.

The session highlighted the importance of building authentic grassroots connections and earning the trust of communities as a foundation for meaningful political leadership. Participants were encouraged to understand the needs of the people they seek to represent and maintain genuine connections beyond electoral periods.

The discussion also challenged young leaders to question the status quo and embrace leadership with purpose, encouraging them to approach political participation not merely as a pursuit of positions, but as an opportunity to create meaningful change within their communities and the country.

The role of social media in modern political engagement also featured prominently, with participants recognising its potential to enable leaders to connect with citizens, communicate directly and create platforms for meaningful public engagement.

Importantly, the session emphasised the need for young people aspiring to leadership to prepare holistically for its demands—including political, financial and emotional preparedness. Such preparation, participants noted, is critical to building resilient and responsible leaders capable of navigating the complexities of public leadership.

Through the Youth Legislators Conference, the County Assemblies Forum continues to provide platforms that strengthen youth voices, participation and leadership in devolved governance, while equipping young leaders with knowledge and networks to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s democratic development.
